the check_procs plugin can also be used to check that a snort process is
running. Tou could also use the custom error handling to make nagios ( I
preferred the name netsaint, but copyright etc etc ) restart the service
if it died for any reason. This service can also be used to make sure
that the DB is there and working, there are also plugins for checking
your $DBOFCHOICE is accepting logins and looks OK
