If you're already planning on having the sensors log to a central database,
you wouldn't need to do any replication unless you wanted to mirror that
data out to many different sites.  

Am I missing something here?

        The objective of it is to have a central database with the data from
all the sensors. The database in each sensor would only be some sort of
"cache" :-)
