Erek, Just to let everyone know; the Snort binaries that are featured at www.Winsnort.com and www.SiliconDefense.com are binaries created by Chris Reid (http://www.codecraftconsultants.com). Once the auto Installer was created I felt that it was really unnecessary to create the builds when Chris was compiling them in a timely fashion. Note to Chris: Thank you very much for your contributions to the Snort Windows community. It is appreciated by all. There is also way more to www.Winsnort.com and www.SiliconDefense.com as far as just the Snort Binaries for Windows. There are complete guides for installing an IDS using Snort for the Windows platform. These guides have been converted to almost every language. These binaries and windows installation guides are for everyone, regardless of who they are. It's a free service provided by Silicon Defense (www.silicondefense.com) and Dynamic Data Solutions (www.winsnort.com). The guides are updated often, keeping all the latest support programs available, tested and available through the downloading options in the guides. Silicon Defense (www.silicondefense.com) and Dynamic Data Solutions (www.winsnort.com) provide free support through the lists and we answer dozens of email questions each week, as a free service. We are trying to support and promote Snort as much as we can. We are just one little tiny piece in the big picture. sorry for the confusing question ... but ... do Win32 developers work in sync with items? im trying to figure out where to get Win32 Snort 2.0.1 binaries from ... from what i know or seem to know from observing list/sites: snort.org - not available (only *nix) winsnort.com - built by michael steele? http://www.codecraftconsultants.com/Snort.aspx - built by chris reid? both claim to have flexRESP support but via libnetNT but its broken(?) and then the special binary passed around via Jeff Nathan which has updated support for libnetNT ... (i don't know if this info is correct) and then barnyard for Win32 which is only currently available @ http://www.codecraftconsultants.com/Barnyard.aspx
The official Win32 package on Snort.org is built by Chris Reid. The packages on his website are from various CVS verions. At the present time the 2.0.1 binary isn't posted to Snort.org (Soon to come!), but the 'Build 88' version on Codecraft's website would be equivalent. Winsnort.com's builds are simply those that Michael has built that he's offering as a service to his customers and the Win32 Snortee's. He's "just someone" who's offering binaries. :) Hope that helps clear it up! ----- Erek Adams "When things get weird, the weird turn pro." H.S.
