running oinkmaster - Error: unable to download.....

Deal All, 

I'm trying to test-run oinkmaster.pl by creating a
empty rules directory as: /tmp/rules/, and then run
the script as below: 

#oinkmaster.pl -o /tmp/rules 
Downloading rules archive from
http://www.snort.org/dl/rules/snortrules-stable.tar.gz...

/usr/local/bin/oinkmaster.pl: Error: unable to
download rules from
http://www.snort.org/dl/rules/snortrules-stable.tar.gz
(got error code from wget).

Oink, oink. Exiting...

wget is working in the path: 

# which wget
/usr/local/bin/wget
------------------------

I checked the /tmp/rules directory, obviously, no
rules are copied there. 

Can anyone explain why please.
