snort build doubt

Hello,
    I am bit curious to know the use of "gmake check" that is optional in snort build.
Please anyone of you can explain me the use of this switch.
Does it performs any testing?.I think there is any testsuites that comes with snort source.
Does it call any predefined function.Does "gmake check" have any value of importance.
