I get "no such file or directory". I have narrowed down the issue to the configure file not having the execute 
[-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 759316 Jan 20  2007 configure] permission. I am logged in as root. Why don't I have execute 
permissions on it? I am the all powerful root for god's sake.

Is there a way I can get execute permissions on that file?

as the message says, your user doesn't have permissions in there... what user
are you logged in as when this happens?? what does the following show?

ls -la /where/libdnet/is/located
