null ports in snort database

,Hi Sir  ? What is the meaning of null ports in snort database  Can I add rules of version 2940 to snort file rules of 
old version and add "include $RULE_PATH/new_version.rules" to snort.conf or edit some "community_sid- msg.map" ?is the 
old ver. of snort runs properly   in this case
 ........any way without update the version
