you are welcome... i'm glad we finally figured out the source of the confusion ;)

FWIW: IMHO, that document needs just a slight bit of tweaking/rewriting to fix 
things like that so that others don't fall prey to the same confusion... but 
that's up to someone else to do...

    if you renamed /etc/init.d/snort to /etc/init.d/snortd as i suggested, then you
    will not use "snort" from the command line again... you will always use
    "/etc/init.d/snortd" maybe with parameters like "start", "stop", or "status"...

    eg: /etc/init.d/snortd status

    does it make sense now what was happening before?
