Personally, I have contributed basically nothing, but it has been great to
learn from people like Jeff and the guys contributing to this thread so
far.

It has made the difference between one /16 I used to look after being up or
not on a number of occasions, and it is much appreciated - even if we don't
get an opportunity to say that very often.

Thanks for the update Frank, I saw the notice on Slashdot that he had
passed but I didn’t realize it was “that” Jeff Kell. When I got Snort
going 17 years ago (thanks for the annual reminders, LinkedIn) I had no
idea we’d still be here talking about it this far down the road. Time and
the actuarial tables eventually catch up with us all and we’ve seen it in
this community (and SF too) but it’s always a shock to hear about someone
you know - had beers with, problem solved with, and enjoyed camaraderie
with.

I think it’s a good idea to memorialize the contributors who helped make
this community what it is.

Thanks, again, Frank, I appreciate you letting us know.

Marty

Very sad indeed.

In addition to all his other efforts, Jeff was a significant contributor
to Shadowserver back in the day.
He was always willing to give of his time and resources.
I always remember him willing to help others, expecting nothing in return.

A great guy who will be missed.

Good afternoon,

It's been a while since I posted to these list. Please excuse the
cross-post, but I thought I'd share what I just read about on Slashdot.

It struck me with sadness to learn that one of our early members and
contributors, Jeff Kell, passed away on November 25th. Jeff was a member
of our IDS community, going back over a decade if not longer. He was
active in the Snort lists, the OSSRC attempt, BleedingEdge Snort and
EmergingThreats. He was an early adopter of SnortSam and provided
valuable feedback. At least those where the areas I knew him from.

It's always sad to learn about people and their accomplishments from
their obituaries, and Jeff is no exception. I think I've only met him
once in person, at one of our annual security conferences in Nashville,
and he struck me as a quiet but great guy. The opportunity to have a
coffee and talk IT has sadly passed by and is no more.

We will miss you, Jeff. Rest in peace and may your work continue to live
on.

With condolences to family and friends,
Frank
