It was always planned on moving to Lua 5.3 at least. But also the library
API changed which is some work still left over

It’s possible that there are incompatibilities, which would necessitate
modifying Lua scripts , but for me personally, I don’t mind changing my
scripts if I have to. In fact, I **want** to change my scripts in order
to make use of some new features, in particular the bitwise operators[1].
To me, the perfect time to update would be for the next Wireshark 3.0
release.

Previous discussion starts here:

Maybe João, Pascal, Peter, Hadriel and others would like to weigh in again
here?

Is there any particular reason why Wireshark for Windows still ships with
Lua 5.2.4? An upgrade to 5.3+ would be a welcome one.

Thanks.

Can our current code run fine with Lua 5.3/5.4? Based on previous
discussions in -dev I thought it was not the case but maybe I'm wrong (I'm
not a Lua user myself and this is based on exchanges from a few years ago).

If it is safe, I will happily update the package.

And would the existing scripts be compatible with Lua 5.3 or 5.4?
