I kind of caught the middle of the thread, but wouldn't an appliance box not use a Hard Drive. Something more along the lines of Non-Volatile memory, like the PIX. I'm not opposed to Firewalls having Hard Drives, I run many like that myself. But, if you are going to install a firewall in front of a large network, where the firewall is the only way out, I'd want the least amount of moving parts in that device. Just a thought is all. -----Original Message----- From: William Bradd [mailto:wbradd () comcast net] Sent: Wednesday, March 19, 2003 10:46 AM To: Stadler, Brian T; security-basics () securityfocus com Subject: RE: Cisco Pix Vs. There's a hard drive in the box? I was at a Symantec Demo and this is what I see: * appliance based * setup is done using symantec ghost which creates an image on the appliance harddisk * There 's a front panel, where u used to set IP address, password * the managment's station Mac/Ip address is noted by the box, so choose the managment station carefully. * gui-based managment Rgds, Simon ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
