I'm in the same position as you. One would think Mandrake or Redhat, but I was told, and I suggest jumping right in with something a little harder then the start point. Kind of like playing a game for the first time. If you play the hardest diffuculty setting right when you start then you are accusstomed to that level of gameplay whereas someone else would have another learning curve moving up. Try Slackwear and/or Knoppix STD. I'm new myself so someone else may offer better advice.
