RE: Ad-aware installs spyware

Please note for the record: I did not state that Spybot S&D detected
Ad-Aware as spyware, but rather I heard a rumor of it doing such and
never experienced it as detecting as such! I was simply commenting on
Leon's initial comment of Ad-Aware installing an additional component
that may/may not be malicious.

Keep handy a few other anti-SW apps with you. Sometimes along with
running these apps, some manual registry hunting is in order as well.
Worst case scenario's I've had to do complete rebuilds.

Thanks!

Spybot doesn't detect it because Ad-Aware is a competing product, it
detects the files that ad-aware quarantines (spyware it finds). In
fact Spybot tells you just that fact when you install it.

Not to sound like the poster-child for Ad-Aware, but I've read articles
stating the power of Ad-Aware (free version) compared to others freeware
anti-spyware apps. I've heard rumors before that Spybot S&D would
detect Ad-Aware as spyware because it being a competitive product, but
I've never experienced that firsthand.

Could you maybe be thinking of any of the sponsored links that appear
when
you query for 'ad-aware'?

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=ad-aware&btnG=Search&meta=

If you suspect that certain anti-spyware products are indeed making the
situation worse, check here:

Specifically, read this note about noadware (which is one of the
sponsored
links appearing in that query):

Maybe my memory miserves me but I thought I remember
reading in the news that a few months back people
found that ad-aware was installing something along
with it. I have been looking for articles on this and
found nothing. Is my mind failing in my old age?
Does anyone know what I am talking about and perhaps
has a link to an article from a news site?

Thx
