My feeling is the best edge is the past work you have done within a company and what value you can bring to a new company that you are looking to work for. You designed that and it did that oh wow thas great, rather then I got my XXX certification and I want $ for money as I am super certified and better then everyone. Anyone can sit long enough and read a book and pass a test. Thats a cookie cutter type the world has enough of those.

Is it better (in terms of technology and industry acceptablity) to get a university degree on information security than certifications such as ccna/ccsp, ceh (or security+) and cissp? SoumBoth actually. I say 97% of all jobs these days at least in the states require a formal BS degree. The certifications are a added bonus to show your skills and give you the edge over your competition.
