RE: Security Certifications

I agree totally. Until hearing of this change, I was seriously considering
pursuing the GSEC cert. I will admit it is probably easier to obtain now,
but that's the problem. It is now EASIER to obtain. I was look for
something that would be harder to earn than the certs that I already have,
not just as easy as.

I guess the CISSP is my best option now, at least until the cheapen that
one, too......

I seriously doubt that I will renew my two certs with GIAC. Cannot
adequately

express how disappointed I am with the watering down of them. This is not
the

first time GIAC has made these certs easier. Hopefully Mr. Northcutt is

subscribed to this list.

I just found out about this too. I can understand how this would make

it easier to get the certification too, but it still requires money and

renewal. Not everybody would be willing to renew every two or four

years unless they really wanted to put forth the effort. Hopefully we

will see some changes that will keep the certs as a prestigious

accomplishment.

GIAC has recently made massive changes to their certifications. You now
only have

to do the exams as there is no more practical portion. A poor decision on
their

part in my opinion for this is what made them stand apart from the other
certs.

Hello Everybody,

I just finished my master's degree in Information Security from Stevens

Institute of Technology and I am looking to get my first security

certification. I've read about the many security certifications out

there, and I have decided to go with the Security+ certification from

CompTIA. How does everybody feel about this certification? I would've

rather tried to get the CISSP but you need experience for that, and

that's something that I don't have right now. Is this a good first

certification in the Information Security Field or are there better
ones?

Personally, I would go for the GSEC from GIAC. Visit www.sans.org to

find out when training is. Unfortunately, the class and cert is about

$3100. It isn't the easiest to get, but if you put in the time and

effort, you get a cert that not everyone gets from an organization that

is looked up to for security.
