Is there a way to implement RBL within an email client ? If so you dont need much of the super duper applications written today to stop spam. RBL usually works perfectly on mail servers. I dont see how it couldnt work on clients too. In addition to an antivirus client , and relevant security methods that prevent image tailing from the net through an html embedded email , etc.. you should be perfectly safe and sound. However the key requirementis that should be maintenance free. There is no IT dept at this ORG.There are 6 users who will need the filtering software, and we will purchase if it is reasonably priced. (unless if someone wants todonate we will give them a tax-deductible donation receipt :-)I like Symantec's BRIGHTMAIL product. Once configured, it just works. It can also be remotely administered as it is configured via a web browser. Email comes in and is scanned for both SPAM and Viri. Rules, configured on the box, determine how the email is processed. You can have it filter messages for some or all of the recipients, or none of them based on the rules you create. Messages deemed as Spam can be delivered to a users 'quarantine' mailbox which sits on the server and is accessed through a web browser. The end users are notified on a schedule you set up on the box, hourly, daily, etc... They receive an email which shows them the date, sender and subject of the messages caught in their quarantine box. Also in the email are links to the individual messages and a link to "release" the message which will immediately deliver the message to their inbox. As it uses Brightmails own spam filters which it gets by aggregating properties of millions of spam messages received at Brightmails spam servers around the world, updates are downloaded automatically on a regular basis and require no administrative overhead. Should you want to get a little more involved, you can set up the box to use public Blacklists or setup your own local blacklists on the server. You canWhitelist address, domains and IP Addresses as well. It's a good product that I use and recommend. Alternatively, I've used McAfee's Spam Assassin and it wasn't nearly as easy to configure or maintain. It wouldnt be a bad idea to write a plugin or a transparent proxy that implements RBL for local email retrieval!
