Wow! Thanks for all the replies to my question! You are all very helpful and kind and I appreciate your advice. Oh, and Matthias, your English is just fine, no apologies necessary. :) Again, thanks everyone! KP On Thu, Jun 25, 2009 at 1:47 AM, Matthias Brogies<matthias.brogies () tki-solutions de> wrote:
Hey Ken! You don't have to worry! Port No. 113 is an relict of the old Arpanet world! It's named "auth" It was used to count and authenticate users on old machines! The first few years only servers had connection to the "Internet" and clients have started the searching on the net over the server. And the protocol auth was used to scan the outgoing tcp connection and to identify which user has build up the connection! I hope it will help you! And sry for my bad english! ________________________________ Von: listbounce () securityfocus com im Auftrag von Ken Pryor Gesendet: Mi 24.06.2009 17:39 An: security-basics () securityfocus com Betreff: Port question Hello all, I just joined the list and this is my first post to it. I am a networking noob and am not sure if this is something I should worry about or not. I just set up a Smoothwall Express firewall and later ran a Shields Up scan at grc. com It showed all ports as stealth except one, port 113, which it showed as closed. Shields Up gave my system a "failed" score based on that one port showing as closed. My question is, is this anything I need to worry about and, if so, how might I fix it? Thanks to all who offer their knowledge and help to those of us just getting started.
