Re: 2 firewalls protecting internal network

Defense-in-depth is not about having 2 FW from different vendors, rather the principle focuses on protecting different
layers of the network. The focus of this principle is very wide ranging from Perimeter security (FW/IPS/VPN/Email
gateways/DLP etc), Endpoint Security (AV/HIPS/NAC/Disk Encryption/DLP etc),and User awareness.

Some people call having 2 FW as 2-tier architecture.

Theoretically, it negates the possibility of a compromise by 'firewall bypass’ if an attacker exploits a vulnerability
of a specific platform. So, it gives a sense of security :)

On the other hand, having this architecture adds a lot of administrative burden and cost. Last but not the least, it
calls for a multi-skilled professional to perform maintenance, upgrade and BAU activities on different platforms.
