This is a stupid topic. If we're being this paranoid about the cables themselves, start using Kerberos. Start Encrypting. Who gives a hoot about the kernel and /dev/nit when the person has root on your system?
It helps make things harder and can save you hassle. When supercomputer.swan was broken into the last hacker check was for /dev/nit. Having seen no /dev/nit we were not bothered in the next 30 minutes before we spotted the attack. Its also good consideration for other users. Alan
