As a person who worked on the Human Genome project, no, this scenario is not yet plausible in any meaningful way except to get an idea of which genetic predispositions a person may have, and even that would be limited to what we've mapped in terms of genotyping. Genotyping, or mapping of which genes are associated with a specific function or trait, is different from sequencing, or determining the order the CATG bases go in the genome. The missing pieces of information in our body of knowledge in the space are the mapping of regions on chromosomes to their genetically expressable functions. For good and obvious reasons, most work in this area has been focused on locating genes responsible for diseases. Way back when I worked on this, the Genome center at MIT found some of the genes that had a strong association for developing Irritable Bowel Disease. Hell of an icebreaker at parties, but a tiny example of the interconnectedness of genes to each other and to environmental factors. Bottom line, this body of genotyping knowledge is far from complete, nor completely analyzed at this time. Fun to think about for a minute. Now back to your regularly scheduled hacking. -Katie From: yersinia Sent: 11/1/2013 7:32 AM To: Dave Aitel Cc: dailydave () lists immunityinc com Subject: Re: [Dailydave] The Source On Thu, Oct 31, 2013 at 7:32 PM, Dave Aitel <dave () immunityinc com> wrote:
So, to continue today's email flood, one thing I've been thinking about, as it pertains to cyberweapons, is of course, the original information virus of them all: DNA. First of all, I think it's pretty clear databases exist that are wide enough and complete enough (and covert enough) that a complete family tree of almost everyone in certain regions exists. Likewise, I'm pretty sure you (for certain values of "you") can take any given DNA sample and back-port it to a picture of that person. DNA databases are almost by definition hugely scary. I don't know if they qualify as "cyber weapons" in and of themselves, but they're close.
Interesting observation. I do not think that something like this kind can be described as cyber weapon, but it certainly could be a munition. A very powerful ammunition, if do you know as to use, but a munition. Probably a munition looking for a good weapon that can use it for the best : who knows if it may already exist in some underground magazine ...
