Centers

Hi -

We, Syracuse University, have started to use Brightmail's anti-SPAM product
with tremendous success. We automatically delete all SPAM and then forward
the remaining email through Trend Micro's anti-virus filter. We run both
applications on a Sun Solaris box using the open source sendmail milter
interface. The installation of the system took a little time, but the
support burdens are minimal.

It seems that we average 70% SPAM and 1.5% email viruses, except during the
sobig fiasco, during a normal day. We fluctuate between 200,000 to 400,000
mail messages per day.

You can read about the near-zero out-of-pocket cost DNSBL-based solution we
use at http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~joe/spamwar/ (PPT and PDF formats
provided). Couple of changes since that presentation this summer:

-- the Wirehub/Easynet DNSBL has discontinued operation effective December
1
(use SORBS or NJABL instead), and
-- a new extremely effective DNSBL, the CBL (see http://cbl.abuseat.org/ )
   has become available.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a note off list and I'd be
glad to visit with you about those concerns.
