What do you consider maintenance? Adding or removing ports from a switch
or changing access-lists on firewalls count?

We have different windows for different projects. When multiple
projects may be affected we use the most restrictive window.

Our outage windows are typically Tue,Wed,Thu from 6am to 8am. Although
for outages that are going to be longer, we schedule during the weekend,
etc The general idea is not to make changes Mondays or Fridays. and not
during the day when people are using the services.

We've let our regular maintenance window get away from us, I'm afraid.
There is no regularly scheduled window, although certain database
systems are shut down weekly for backup (early Sunday morning) and
another stops briefly each night at midnight for same, but that one only
takes a couple of minutes.

All other service outages are scheduled individually, with consultation
with the departments most affected by the systems involved. Brian could
have been on our team, as we don't make changes Mondays or Fridays, and
like generally to to maintenance in weekday morning hours, so tech
support is readily available and more likely to be in a time zone
similar to ours. This sometimes necessitates delay in maintenance, which
we deal with as possible. Some times I wish we had a routine four hours
where one could count on random systems being down for service, but
there's always someone working at any given time, it seems.
