I would believe that would be determined by your university policy on such matters. The seat license isn't going to look to see who owns the machines only the count of how many machines the seat license is loaded onto. What if that person does not own that PC and it is property of someone else or a business or institution? I wonder if the 5 seats have to include PCs that you own personally? Although this could be highly unlikely, what if, for some reason, the PC that is owned by the school/business was confiscated and music was found belonging to someone else? Does this become copyright infringement? I would think that it would. In fact, until recently, you couldn't transfer music off the iPod via iTunes, period. Now you can do so only if you 1) Purchased the music via iTunes and 2) Use the destination PC as one of your 5 'seats'. It sounds like she want to have iTunes so that she can easily rearrange the playlists that are already on her iPod. --Joey _____ From: The EDUCAUSE Security Constituent Group Listserv [mailto:SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU] On Behalf Of Todd Bossaller Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2008 7:07 AM To: SECURITY () LISTSERV EDUCAUSE EDU Subject: [SECURITY] Downloading music at work I have a faculty member that teaches dance and wants to download iTunes to an institutional PC to add and rearrange music for their dance class. (She uses and iPod) If the music is purchased on their personal account and then transferred to a PC that is owned by the institution, is this copyright infringement? Has anyone else faced this issue and what did you do? Thank you, Todd
