made me take notice that you refer *nix as "the unknown".   go ahead and
muck with it - software itself is cheap to get, and it runs reasonably fast
even on old 386 boxes (well, if you are not running X...).   once you play
with it, you'll see why many folks refer to windows (pick your version) as
"the unknown".   at the least, it will help you understand TCP/IP networking
better - thus helping you working with windows boxes as well.  also, it
seems like majority of the hacker community make linux/bsd their os of
choice.    
many small hack codes compile on linux/freebsd without modification. 

it looks like caldera and red hat are the leading pushers of linux - freebsd
cdrom can be ordered via walnut creek cdrom company (cdrom.com, i think)
which also distribute slackware distribution of linux, another popular linux
distribution.  you'll see lots of books on linux in bootstores, and many of
the basic UNIX programming texts apply to linux equally well.
