I think this frames the "argument in the wrong terms. I don't think it's a question of pro ids or pro firewall. The question is, where is the technology taking us?

Look at IDS and what do you see? A move toward IPS. IPS essentially consists of blocking known "bad" hosts or networks. What do firewalls do? Block known bad hosts, networks and unwanted traffic.

Seems to me like the two are headed for a marriage. :-)

As far as bandwidth issues goes, the move to ASICS appears to be obviating that objection. ASICS-based equipment can handle a lot of bandwidth without falling over, and when you think about it, why *shouldn't* a security device be a purpose-built appliance?

Is there anyone of the 'other' side who agrees with gartner? Perhaps it
can be an interesting discussion between pro ids' persons and pro
firewall persons?
