If you dont want to pay for a debugger, ollydbg is pretty cool. I
coughed up the bucks for IDA though, its well worth it. 'specially
with the process explorer and other snap-ins.

You wont break anything as you cant edit files with IDA or ollydbg (to
my knowledge)
