der Mouse to me:

IEEE is an abbreviation (unless I'm entirely unaware that it is
normally pronounced "i-ee" or something, rather than "i-e-e-e" or
"i-triple-e").

I fail to see how the latter pronunciations disqualify it as a word.
Certainly they make more obvious sense than what happens to the
prounuciation when you tack an "s" onto the beginning of "laughter".

From the logician's perspective, spoken vs. pronounced English makes
little (obvious) sense, but as we all know that anyway from our
experience of learning (to varying degrees) both written and spoken
forms of the language, your comment is a non-sequiter.

It is obvious to a native English speaker and writer that "IEEE",
pronounced "i-e-e-e" _OR_ "i-triple-e" is precisely as much unlike a
word, as "poo", pronounced "poo" AND NOT "pee-oh-oh" (excuse my total
failure to attempt to render that in anything more phonetic or IPA-ish)
_is_ like a word.

I guess being Canadian (??) you're somewhat less of a native English
speaker than others of us, though more so, I'd hope, than your typical
yank...

Regards,

Nick FitzGerald
