No. If you find that you can't provide what they need, then you go back
to the drawing board, and think about operating in a different area. So,
if you can't do the right sort of word processor, you start to think about
spreadsheets.

What if it costs $40M to do a proper spreadsheet, but $5M to convince
people your lame-ass word processor that you've already done is what they
really need?

One of the functions of marketing is to discover that the lame-ass WP you
were about to write, isn't going to sell. $5m isn't going to convince many
people to buy a lame-ass WP.

The point of the market research is to keep you from making expensive
mistakes by launching products that people don't buy.

Note that a possible solution there is to convert the marketing for a beached
whale product into one that features "Now! With 200% more healthy fish oils
than the competition!" (Yes, I know cetaceans are mammals. Convincing the
public they're fish is the marketing department's job...)

If you were thinking of making whalebone corsets out of your whale, and
the marketing department discover that there's an unsatisfied
health-market demand for whale blubber converted to oil, then the
marketing department have done a good job.

I think what I'm saying is that, just like programmers, you can actually
have Dark Side folks who abuse the craft for Dark Side purposes. But most
marketers (and programmers) are just good folks trying to do a decent job.
