Their existing residential user base has proven that they dont care
about performance (1.5mb vs comcast's 8mb, $25/mo vs $40/mo). They
care about being able to afford _something_ faster than dial up, but
less than cable. This move is not geared towards the consumer, but
towards the provider.

Hopefully the wireless ISP's will show Ma Bell (who I used to work
for) that owning a cable that runs to someones house is not that
important with todays technology.

IMO, this is just the death throes of BellSouth (hope they enjoyed the
75 years of monopoly, and saved up some cash during that time)
