You know, I had this really long response, but I'll pare it down

First, to posit the argument that _domestic_ surveillance of
U.S. citizens (and, completely bypassing the FISA court in the
process as prescribed by law) will somehow put a dent in al-Qaeda
is a stretch.

Secondly, the "war on terror" is something that is a (in my opinion)
a very thin and blurry line which will most probably extend into
the infinite future. See also: "war on drugs", etc.

You forgot:

Tertiarily, the vast majority of Al Queda was trained by the CIA and
US military. These guys arent stupid, well except for that one idiot
who tried to set off C4 with a lighter.... Ok, maybe the vast amount
of people who are joining up with Al Queda are pretty stupid, but the
core threat comes from the CIA trained ones.

Tell you what though, if you want to be really safe, let me lock you
and your family in a box and do body cavity searches daily. That is
the only way I can guarantee your safety. I know its a little much to
ask, but for the safetly of your children, you have to acquiesce.

I think people can decide for themselves how, or how not, this
either helps or hurts.

In a time of war, leaks like this that really aren't telling the public
anything new(CALEA is a 90's thing), and are only published to make the
current administration look bad. The real damage to us all is telling
the terrorist something they may have not considered
previously(remember, we're not dealing with a bunch of tactical geniuses
here).
