Well, you *know* it wasn't cause-and-effect.  If these guys had enough
money to be caught by mining bank data, they'd have *bought* themselves
the means to carry out an attack.

More likely, the mining revealed the group was mostly harmless, so they
cut them loose and waited for when they needed a diversion.....
