Playing classical music is also supposed to work well.  Personally, I think the best protection is a large sign that 
reads:

Kids!  Come on in!  We're "hip" to your concerns.  Let's sit down and "get real"!

(I used to be really sensitive to high frequencies: flaky flourescent ballasts would just about drive me up the wall.  
I wonder how much I've lost in that range ....)
