the reason behind the effective ban on private ownership of firearms in
Ireland in 1972 was "The Troubles". It did nothing to stop the IRA, who
were getting their weapons from, among others, the then Minister for
Defense, and later Taoiseach (Prime Minister), Charlie Haughey (a very
successful fat, old, white criminal who cheated justice by dying before
trial).

 

The legacy is a massive increase in violent crime that the Gardai are
unable to stem.
