Tomas L. Byrnes to me: [big snip of irrelevancies]
Your corny and antiquated trust in your "betters", and the belief that government and politics attract only the best and brightest, as opposed to a lot of the lazy and corrupt, is what is completely misplaced.
I never said that, and don't believe it. I think all sectors are about equally capable of attracting, and attractive to, such levels of incompetence, greed and corruption, and about equally well motivated to (which varies greatly through all sectors from time-to-time and for a huge variety of causes), and therefore about equally likely to, uncover said incompetence and deal with it (appropriately or otherwise). The naysayers to this tend to fundamentally neglect that the "public sector" is, by design _and in practice_ (at least in "more developed" regions), much more open to (external) observation and therefore readily appears to naïve analysis to harbour more "general cluelessness". Such naïve analysis also tends to significantly neglect that the preivate sector is much more heavily motivated _by design_ to coverup such incidents if at all possible, thus further tilting the apparent "imbalance". I've worked in both sectors and have many good friends and colleagues in both sectors and the view of a skeptic from the inside of either is scarcely different (other than the pay rates).
