or am I supposed to "like" the fact that a friend has died?

You "join" groups.

You become a fan of fan pages, which has recently become "like".

If you see an activity of someone joining or liking such a group or page
respectively, you can also comment on this, or "like" it. The latter
will now not like the activity, but rather make you a fan as well.
Recent change, that one.

For any number X which is less than 2^N (for any N), a maximum of
(N + log(N) + log (log(N)))/8 bytes is necessary to represent X.
The math could be slightly incorrect, but it sounds right.
