Those types have a big pleasure centers and they will feed it despite
the risk. Its no surprise he had an affair, and has likely had more
than one.

It might make him immoral, but I don't think it makes him a bad
soldier. The military needs psychopathic and sociapathic
personalities. They are the ones who can continually give orders to
kill, despite the collateral damage (death of innocent men, women and
children). And not care less.
