Wireless wars: Pentagon digs in
The U.S. military stands between wireless carriers and the spectrum they
covet. In two weeks, several government agencies are scheduled to issue a
final report outlining new spectrum to be freed for so-called 3G wireless
services. However, the U.S. armed forces are occupying the center of the
band that's been identified by the World Radio Conference (WRC) as one to
be used worldwide for 3G and that's viewed by wireless carriers--such as
Verizon Wireless, Sprint PCS, Cingular and AT&T Wireless--as the
beachfront property on the radiomagnetic map.
