Among the neatest gadgets there was some software from Eyematic (http://www.eyematic.com). It, too, looks like a Neal Stephenson invention: Your face, with all its twitches, raised eyebrows, and moving mouth is reproduced as an animated avatar on your correspondent's machine. Benefit here: No need to transmit all those high-res pixels in 30 frames per second for a Webcam chat. Instead, you transmit the vector geometry of your face, which is drawn at the other end as a cartoon and then the Eyematic client transmits only those parts of your face or environment that move as you communicate. The movements are then reproduced by the avatar at the other end. Your avatar can look like you, Bugs Bunny, or Pokemon. Company says the product will be in the market by the third quarter of the year. Kinda cool, really, for its unique approach to solving the bandwidth issue for real-time rich communications.
