Dave,I lived in Las Vegas from the early 1960s until 1986. My family has been in Las Vegas since the early 1930s. My father, brother and sister all still live in Las Vegas, and, in fact, I'm writing this from the Las Vegas airport. (My paternal grandfather (re)-set the granite pillars from the old Las Vegas airport (now Nellis AFB) to their current location in 1948.While the "adult" companies were at COMDEX, the were always separate (modulo the models and actresses on the floor as booth bunnies, and working girls in the bars and on the sidewalks.) Over time, their presence grew, and they were relocated to the Sands Expo Center. Some version of AVN's AEE has only been running since 1993, and is always held in conjunction with CES (January) not COMDEX (November).Your readers may want to check Hal Rothman's "Neon metropolis" for other details.-- Jim On Jan 8, 2010, at 2:27 PM, Dave Farber <dave () farber net> wrote:Begin forwarded message:From: Amy Wohl <amy () wohl com> Date: January 8, 2010 5:24:46 PM EST To: dave () farber net Subject: RE: [IP] Gadgets and GartersA replay. When COMDEX ruled Las Vegas they originally permitted theporn-brokers on the floor. As a member of the program committee and a columnist in the show daily, I complained to COMDEX's owner Sheldon Adelson both in person and in my column. The adult entertainment moved to another Las Vegas venue, but ran simultaneously with COMDEX. It just (so I heard)got raunchier, on its own.I don't know the relationship between the adult entertainment show of the COMDEX era and this one, but I bet a lot of the players both running thebooths and visiting them are the same. Many are less aware of the historical overlap of this meeting (and shared convention locations) with the AEE (Adult Entertainment Expo). Here's a pointer to LV Sun article about the two and their history: http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/jan/07/gadgets-and-garters/ Some interesting quotes:More than 100,000 people attended the technology show, and most are men.Apparently, a lot of the geeky are a little freaky. According to a recent survey, 42 percent of adult expo attendance comes from CES, Devlin says. Last year's adult expo lured more than 20,000 fans and conventioneers, organizers said. and:The more than $13 billion a year adult entertainment business is intotechnology - high definition, downloadable, 3-D - most of it available onevery video device in existence. And, note that the IP list moderator, back in the mid-eighties or so, predicted that many of the tactile devices then being developed weredestined to find major application in the adult entertainment field. ------------------------------------------- Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/247/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/247/ Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com No virus found in this incoming message.
