Stop cringing and give them /48s. It’s really not going to harm anything. Really. Look at the math. That scale of waste is a very very pale glimmer compared to the LAN side of things where you have 18,000,000,000,000,000,000 (and then some) addresses left over after you put a few hundred thousand hosts on the segment. Also, claiming that 90% will never have more than 2 or 3 subnets simply displays a complete lack of imagination. Household networks will continue to gain sophistication and with automated topologies developed through more advanced applications of DHCP-PD, you will, in fact, start seeing things like WLAN+GuestWLAN+LAN on separate segments, entertainment systems which generate their own segment(s), appliance networks which have separate routed segments, etc. Unfortunately, most of these future applications don’t stand a chance while we’re still mired in IPv4 and IPv4-think about how to allocate addresses.
