building something like this for service fingerprints.
When I do it I mostly do everything in mutt but I
can see how a custom tool could help.

I should mention that it's designed to be used with Mutt. I read the
submission mbox and press 'p' to pipe a message into OSassist. ('p' is a
good choice because by default it's bound to "print".) OSassist greps
out the fingerprint from the submission. Then when you kill OSassist
you're back at Mutt.
