If I reply 'yes', it tells me that key retrieval failed. I'm not sure
why gmail would be asking me for a 'private' key.

Actually you'd need my *public* key to verify my signature.  I sign all
my email with PGP, as do several others on this list.

I have a pgp key - but what threw me is gmail asking me if I want the
'private' key. It would have seemed ok to me if it asked me if I wanted to
import the 'public' key, but it didn't.
