A friend sent me this the other day, might be useful to implement into nmap. Seems to provide a more accurate traceroute. Please note, the proof of concept tool they provide needs to be ran as a privileged user. http://www.paris-traceroute.net/ Might be interesting to someone, an implementation of this in nmap would make for some interesting "extra accuracy" in traceroute-of-scan :) Unsure if it would be a core or a NSE thing, still getting to grips with the nmap codebase myself in the hope of submitting patches/features in the future.
It looks like a good idea for an NSE script. The idea was mentioned once before, http://seclists.org/nmap-dev/2012/q2/197. Nmap's traceroute is built on quite different principles. It explicitly is designed to find only one of the paths to each target, and uses aggressive caching and parallelism.
