Might be interesting to someone, an implementation of this in nmap
would make for some interesting "extra accuracy" in traceroute-of-scan :)

Unsure if it would be a core or a NSE thing, still getting to grips
with the nmap codebase myself in the hope of submitting
patches/features in the future.

It looks like a good idea for an NSE script. The idea was mentioned

Nmap's traceroute is built on quite different principles. It explicitly
is designed to find only one of the paths to each target, and uses
aggressive caching and parallelism.
