I have found that giving greylisting a fairly short retry minimum (~5 minutes) and a long whitelist period (~6 months) minimizes the end-user complaints- but in circumstances where users deal with many infrequent correspondents it may not not be worth the effort. We use amavis/spamassasin/clamAV for our gateway. We are using the openprotect.com rules channel for rules with a great amount of success. We are also using postgrey to do greylisting of emails but that is not as effective anymore, creates more complaints about delaying mail than stopping SPAM. Dale.
