email Server in Amazon cloud / would rather not use SES

Hi everyone

Does anyone have a stash of information on setting up an email server in
the Amazon cloud and the dangers ? I've been goggling and haven't found any
really golden nuggets.

We currently have a service hosted in AWS.  For some of our various
services we need to be able to send out e-mails to people both inside and
possibly outside of our domain.  We don't want to use Amazon SES if
possible.

One of the projects is currently using gmail to send out e-mails to people
when they request a password reset.

Because this is not for general e-mail usage, the mail server doesn't need
to actually receive e-mails, it just needs to send them out.
