Why not use a hardware keylogger? It's completely trojan free and won't use up any disk space at all. http://www.spyarsenal.com/spy-software.html The above link is one I found on the internet. Hardware key loggers are not cheap, but are very discrete. However, if you want to key log laptops, then software is probably better. I haven't used key loggers, so I can't recommend any specific make or brand.
