Why can't we just give the guy a break? I mean, he (and his colleges)
have put in effort of creating the lab enviroment, aquiering the hardware
and spent the time testing it. Now, if you don't feel like paying $50 (or
what-ever it is) for the full report I suggest two solutions:

1) Register and read the free part of the report. Use google and other
search engines to find out more about the topic yourself and talk to
those very friendly sales people from respective vendor. Sure, I bet
that the information you get would be highly biased but at least you
   get to know a bit.

2) Aquire the hardware yourself and do the testing yourself. Then you
are also free to write your own white paper and publish it for free.

And really, is handing out your email address that hard? I haven't
recived a single spam for the email address I used when I registered,
and I belive that they simply have too much goodwill to loose if they
start to do so.

It's quite common now days that people ask to know who is downloading
their stuff (Sun does that when you want to download Solaris 9 OE for
an example). Not to get a nice marketing list, but to see if their
product/paper/report is well recived or not. Sure, they could look at
the weblogs, but that wouldn't tell them the whole story (not to count
in the additional effort that needs to put in to analyze those logs).
