mysql crashes

That's a werid thing....if anyone've heard about it, let me know....
Rh 8.0, snort and mysql are installed from rpms (mysql ver 3.23.54a)
Everything works, but when I telnet from my workstation  to snort box on 
mysql port - it crashes mysql.
When I scan snortbox from other box to see what ports are opened on 
snortbox-it crashes mysql.

P.S. I do agree that it is not 'snort-affecting' issue, but I just 
wonder if anyone has encountered the same things.
