snort 2.2.0 and linux-smp-stats

I noticed that ./configure had an option to --enable-linux-smp-stats
so i got curious to check it out.  Based on what i've been able to
find, it just allows the perfmonitor preprocessor to report statistics
per CPU.

I thought it wasn't a bad idea since I have a few multi-processor HP
boxes running Linux and Snort, so I compiled it in.

When trying to start Snort, I get this error:
snort: FATAL ERROR: PERFMONITOR ERROR: Error reading CPUs from /proc/stat.

meanwhile, "cat /proc/stat" reports:
cpu  1676224 2 290788 236292714 1368743 98545 461225
cpu0 1152982 0 203148 117949987 683300 2534 102199
cpu1 523242 2 87640 118342727 685443 96011 359026

So there are definitely two CPUs listed.  What gives?
