meanwhile, "cat /proc/stat" reports:

cpu0 1152982 0 203148 117949987 683300 2534 102199
cpu1 523242 2 87640 118342727 685443 96011 359026

So there are definitely two CPUs listed. What gives?

That's interesting, what version of linux are you using? What we parse
is the standard linux /proc/stat that looks like:

cpu 135371 62700 27951 2573984
cpu0 103341 31261 13653 1251747
cpu1 32030 31439 14298 1322236

(ie: five fields, compared to the eight fields you posted).

To further confuse things:

Linux delphi 2.6.6 #3 SMP Mon May 10 16:10:07 MDT 2004 i686 unknown unknown
GNU/Linux

cat /proc/stat
cpu 17343224 11914015 4925434 363727004 582992 464732 222871
cpu0 8668501 7176876 2451228 180332625 278177 464732 218008
cpu1 8674722 4737138 2474206 183394379 304815 0 4863

This is a vanilla kernel from kernel.org
